Biogas Compression for Pipeline Injection in British Columbia: The Dicklands Farms RNG Project

BAUER COMPRESSORS INC., in partnership with Prodeval, delivered a purpose-built biogas compression system for the Dicklands Farms Renewable Natural Gas project in British Columbia, Canada. The installation supports pipeline injection of RNG derived from dairy manure, supplying FortisBC with low-carbon renewable energy.

Prodeval selected BAUER to design and manufacture a compressor package specifically engineered to integrate seamlessly with its standardized biogas upgrading solution. Built in Norfolk, Virginia, the system was configured to match the operational and interface requirements of the upgrading unit, ensuring smooth commissioning and efficient startup.

The site currently produces approximately 500 Nm³/h (300 SCFM) of RNG, with expansion planned to reach 700 Nm³/h as operations scale. To accommodate this growth, BAUER supplied an enclosed 250 HP GRU® 28-250 Duplex compressor. The duplex configuration provides operational flexibility and redundancy, allowing the system to adjust output according to digester flow rates and future production increases.

BAUER GRU® Series compressor systems are PLC-controlled and equipped with variable frequency drive technology. This enables optimized adaptation of compressor flow to fluctuating biogas supply from the digester, improving efficiency and supporting stable pipeline injection. 

The system also includes a gas inlet dewpoint sensor for process protection and comes standard with BAUER CONNECT® for remote monitoring and control, providing operators with real-time system visibility and performance oversight.

Dicklands Farms represents a distinctive multi-product project in North America. In addition to RNG production, the site incorporates potable water recovery from digestate and optimized heat recovery strategies to reduce overall energy consumption. This integrated approach enhances sustainability while maximizing resource utilization on the farm.

Through close collaboration between Prodeval and BAUER COMPRESSORS INC., the Dicklands Farms project demonstrates how tailored compression technology plays a critical role in reliable RNG upgrading and grid injection, supporting the continued expansion of renewable energy infrastructure across North America.
