Glentham Green Energy: Renewable Gas and Food-Grade CO₂ Project Showcase

By DMT Environmental Technology

Overview

The Glentham Green Energy (GGE) facility in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, represents one of the country’s most advanced bioenergy projects. Developed by VIDA Bioenergy, part of the VTTI group, the plant converts organic residues into renewable natural gas (RNG) for injection into the UK’s National Gas Transmission System.

Operational since July 2025, the facility processes biogas from anaerobic digestion and upgrades it to grid-quality biomethane using DMT Environmental Technology’s CarboRex®MS membrane upgrading system. In addition to biomethane production, the plant also recovers valuable biogenic CO₂ using DMT’s CarboCap®CCU bolt-on CO₂ liquefaction system.

Project Overview

The plant processes biogas from organic waste streams to produce biomethane suitable for injection into the national gas grid. The CarboCap®CCU system captures the CO₂-rich stream from the upgrader, compresses, dries, and purifies it before liquefying it into food-grade liquid CO₂ for storage and distribution. Fully automated process control ensures reliable operation and high system availability.

Key Project Components

  • CarboRex®MS Membrane Upgrading System: Purifies biogas to produce high-purity biomethane
  • CarboCap®CCU CO₂ Liquefaction System: Recovers food-grade CO₂ from the biogas stream
  • High-Pressure Grid Connection: Enables injection of biomethane into the UK gas network.

Operational Performance & RNG Output

  • Biomethane Production: 60 GWh annually, enough to heat over 5,000 homes
  • CO₂ Production: First batch of food-grade CO₂ produced in July 2025.
  • System Efficiency: High uptime and low operational complexity.

Environmental & Economic Benefits

  • Converts organic waste into renewable energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Captured CO₂ can be used in beverage carbonation, chemical processes, and greenhouse agriculture.
  • Supports circular economy principles by creating additional value from biogas by-products.

Conclusion

The Glentham project demonstrates DMT’s ability to deliver integrated solutions that combine biogas upgrading with CO₂ recovery. With the CarboRex®MS and CarboCap®CCU systems, operators can efficiently produce renewable gas and high-quality CO₂ while meeting environmental targets and maximizing resource efficiency.
