On the Rise: The Enduring Growth of RNG in the US

The determination and perseverance of the biogas and RNG industry in the US have brought the industry to a tipping point. At a moment when the pendulum swings back towards conventional fuels, industry support persists within states, municipalities, and the private sector. The support for the cross-sectoral potential of the industry now extends into the realms of policymakers and politicians. Most recently, 3 out of 4 people surveyed, across party lines, favoured increasing support for the industry (ABC, 2025). The role of biogas and RNG in waste management and diversifying energy is undeniable.
RNG for transportation fuel remains the largest offtake market in the US, with interest in upgrading biogas at new and existing sites reflecting that. States continue to develop, propose, and implement renewable fuels programs. Despite federal reprioritization in energy policy, industry investment continues. The number of RNG facilities has grown to around 375, with around 150 in construction and another 200 in earlier stages of development. The number of agricultural sites upgrading to RNG matched landfill sites for the first time in 2024, and while the two will likely continue to compete in through 2025, over the long term, agricultural sites have the potential to eclipse landfills.
Source-separated organics, institutional, commercial, industrial (ICI), and wastewater recovery facilities, while accounting for less than a quarter of current facilities, are likely to experience notable growth in the coming decade, as municipalities implement landfill organics bans, companies look to reduce Scope 1 emissions and valorize their wastes, and wastewater facilities explore all opportunities for increasing their revenue streams.
