Iron-based additives, like ferric chloride solutions or ferric oxide powders, are commonly added to anaerobic digesters to reduce the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the biogas.
A new buffered iron chloride solution, SulFeLox, is gaining traction for use in agricultural digesters due to its more benign environmental, health, and safety profile. As a liquid solution, it requires far less manual labor to dose than the iron powders. Since it is buffered at a higher pH than ferric chloride or ferrous chloride, it is less corrosive and easier to handle.
