Job Description

We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as an Intermediate Process Engineer, reporting to the Director, Technology and Innovation, and providing day-to-day supervision of the Operations Specialist and Technology Plant Operator. This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work in our Ottawa office five days a week.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will take the lead on small scale-up projects (~200L), driving the transition from laboratory concepts to pilot-scale production in anaerobic digestion and biogas production. You will lead a small operations team, working collaboratively with our laboratory team to optimize processes, troubleshoot, and deliver innovative solutions that pave the way for commercial scale-up.

  • Contributes to the scale-up and design of the world’s first net-zero cellulose-to-biogas plant
  • Analyzes process configurations, scale-up, process design, and optimization for the various process operating units
  • Monitors and anticipates issues. Researches, troubleshoots, and implements solutions
  • Identifies opportunities to improve unit operations and increase efficiency
  • Develops the design of new or revised equipment, installations, or processes to meet functional requirements or performance specifications
  • Executes components of larger design projects
  • Operates pilot units
  • Leads the pilot operations team

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the process development and unit start-up of specific unit operations. This includes hands-on participation in establishing scale-up methodologies and interaction with vendor equipment trials
  • Regularly report on unit performance. Identify issues; propose and execute solutions
  • Analyze different process configurations; mass and energy balances; optimize; participate in the preparation of PFDs and P&IDs, equipment specification, and risk analysis
  • Supervise Operations Specialist and Technology Plant Operator in pilot operations
  • Support capital upgrade projects in the demonstration plant, which would include the following activities: process design of plant modifications, equipment or process validation

Health, Safety & Environment Responsibilities

Ensure that hazards are identified and addressed and that employees have the processes, procedures, training and tools necessary to be aware of hazards and are equipped to work in compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, corporate procedures, facility health, safety and environmental rules, safe work practices and procedures. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Ensuring the identification of workplace hazards
  • Ensuring that hazards are evaluated and, where required, mitigated in a timely manner
  • Ensuring that workers and supervisors are aware of HSE hazards in their workplace
  • Demonstrating visibly their own HSE commitments by participating in HSE meetings, planned inspections, incident investigations and HSE audits

People Management Responsibilities

As a people manager, this role is responsible for the attraction, development and retention of employees through effective performance management, career development and communication. The role is also responsible for ensuring commitment to, and enabling of, employee engagement and effectiveness.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications

  • University or Masters degree in Applied Science or Engineering (Chemical Engineering is strongly preferred)
  • 5-7 years of experience, preferably in an industrial environment
