As of early 2025, non-fossil fuel-based power generation, including bioenergy, has reached an impressive 213.7 GW, reflecting a robust 14.2% year-on-year growth. India has also successfully blended 15% ethanol into petrol, with the government’s goal of achieving 20% blending by 2025 well on track. Furthermore, policies such as the National Bioenergy Programme are actively fostering investments in biofuels, biogas, and waste-to-energy projects, positioning bioenergy as a cornerstone of India’s evolving energy strategy.

On the global stage, the bioenergy sector is accelerating as part of the broader push toward achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century. Nations around the world are significantly scaling their investments in bioenergy to meet ambitious climate goals, with biofuels and advanced bioenergy technologies playing pivotal roles in these transformative efforts. For India, the 2047 vision is crystal clear: achieving 50% renewable energy in the national energy mix, with bioenergy at its core. By 2070, India’s commitment to net-zero emissions will depend largely on the innovative application of bioenergy, ensuring the nation’s sustainable development while contributing to the global climate movement.
