Cutting-Edge Circular Carbon Production Facility Boosts Resilience and Efficiency in the Biogas Market

By DESOTEC

DESOTEC, Europe’s top supplier of mobile-activated carbon filters, expanded to North America in 2023. They offer sustainable, mobile filtration solutions for liquids and gases, with rental-ready filters, saturated filter recovery, and activated carbon reactivation, all aimed at reducing carbon footprints through a circular approach.

Biogas Market Needs for Eliminating H2S and Related Wastes

For biogas and biomethane production, a cost-efficient, reliable and sustainable H2S removal system is required, but up to now, no sustainable solution existed to recycle high sulphur-loaded carbon waste.

After many years of research, DESOTEC has developed and patented a closed-loop recycling process for used carbon with a high sulfur content from the biogas industry. A Game-Changer for Europe’s Biogas Market This innovation will transform the biogas industry with a new production facility in Belgium, offering key benefits:

  • Reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions: By sourcing up to 80% less coal-based virgin activated carbon from outside Europe, we’ll significantly cut feedstock-related GHG emissions.  The circular design of our processes, like converting waste steam into electricity, boosts sustainability, while our R&D works to increase renewable activated carbon in our portfolio.
  • Cost Savings & Compliance: Our closed-loop purification system will reduce landfilling of spent high-sulfur activated carbon, cutting disposal costs and helping biogas producers meet future waste treatment regulations.
  • Resilient operations: A local supply of high-quality activated carbon ensures uninterrupted operations, minimizes supply chain risks and reduces global activated carbon transport, lowering the carbon footprint. At full capacity, around 15,000 tonnes of ‘Made-in-Europe’ impregnated activated carbon for biogas desulphurization will be produced annually.

Securing the Future of Biogas Producers

Raw materials shortages and tighter regulations on the disposal of spent high-sulfur carbon could undermine the profitability of the European biogas sector.

By valorising a costly waste into a European-made activated carbon of equivalent quality to the virgin one, we are future proofing biogas businesses in Europe while increasing their sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

This innovative way of recycling, which is patented, makes our purification solution fully circular, more cost-effective, and less dependent on non-European carbon supply sources.
