Description

The seventh edition of the Southern Brazilian Biogas and Biomethane Forum is being developed with the help of the organizing institutions: University of Caxias do Sul, International Center for Renewable Energy (CIBiogás), from Foz do Iguaçu (PR), and Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa Swine and Poultry, from Concórdia (SC). This year, already held in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, the itinerant event returns to Serra Gaúcha, where it was born, on April 7 and 8, 2025.

The initiative aims to connect agents involved in the biogas chain, a product generated by microorganisms from agro-industrial and urban waste. Biogas contains a molecule called methane, which is used to produce thermal and electrical energy, and biomethane, which can be used as vehicle fuel. “A green, sustainable energy that meets environmental requirements,” explains UCS professor Suelen Paesi, coordinator of the event in 2025 and researcher at the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory of the University’s Biotechnology Institute. “There is a large amount of waste in our region, and its transformation into energy is of great importance. It is a very practical solution for managing waste that generates a major environmental impact,” adds the researcher.

UCS maintains a tradition of research on the subject, and its dedication to the Forum reflects the institutional focus on fostering technological innovation and economic and social development. The event also values new companies, startups, systems and platforms that can contribute to the production of biogas and biomethane to serve different niches. “We work to ensure that all technology transfers and actions aimed at the biogas energy production market are supported by scientific practice and structure. And science is reflected in technologies that have a practical impact. The more we can dispose of waste, the more the economic sector can grow, linked to environmental care,” said UCS Dean Gelson Leonardo Rech, who met with representatives of the other Forum organizers on Tuesday, August 20, in a preparatory meeting in the Dean’s office. Market engagement is also a guideline for the event, since the biogas chain drives industrial innovation – in this year’s edition, 50 brands presented equipment and services connected to the segment.
