With more almost 3000 biogas facilities in Canada and the USA combined, biogas industry sees the growth due to increase in RNG facilities.

There are nearly 2,500 biogas facilities across the United States, over 300 of which are upgrading biogas to RNG. Landfills remain the largest category of facility, however, this gap has been quickly closed by agricultural facilities in recent years. Wastewater treatment plants, industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI), and source-seperated organics account for the remainder. These facilities have also experienced a steady increase as state policies have begun to benefit the mitigation of food wastes from commercial and municipal sources.

14 facilities have been commissioned thus far in 2024, approximately 30% of the total number of facilities commissioned in 2023. There are over 120 new facilities scheduled to come online by the end of 2024. While it is possible that some will see the delays, the increase is still impressive.

In Canada, there are over 175 biogas facilities operational, 30 of which are upgrading biogas to RNG. The largest category is agricultural facilities, accounting for over one third of biogas sites in Canada, and landfill sites accounting for just under one third. ICI, source-separated organics, and wastewater digesters account for the remaining third.

Three new RNG facilities have been commissioned thus far in 2024, with approximately 30 more scheduled to be commissioned by the end of the year.

Information on operational facilities can be found in BiogasWorld’s Visual RNG Map, available for free on our Biogas Community website. Information on facilities in development is available for BiogasWorld members on the Biogas Community website.
