Scapigliato and Waga Energy Join Forces To Produce RNG in Tuscany, Italy
Eybens (France), May 5th, 2025 – Scapigliato entrusts Waga Energy with renewable natural gas (RNG) production at its Rosignano Marittimo landfill site in Tuscany, Italy.
Scapigliato, a waste management company for the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, Italy, and Waga Energy, a specialist in renewable natural gas (RNG) production on landfills, signed an agreement on April 29th to produce RNG on the town’s site. This contract follows a call for tenders launched by the company in July 2024 and won by Waga Energy.
As part of this agreement, Waga Energy will finance, build and operate a purification unit on the site, using its patented WAGABOX® technology to convert the biogas emitted by the waste into RNG, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas. The WAGABOX® unit will be commissioned in 2027 and operated by Waga Energy for an initial period of 10 years.
The WAGABOX® unit will have an installed capacity of production of 92 GWh (about 314,000 MMBtu) of RNG per year, equivalent to the consumption of around 9,400 Italian households. Its commissioning will avoid the emission of around 15,500 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year into the atmosphere[1], by reducing the use of fossil natural gas.
The RNG produced will be injected directly into the local grid and sold by Waga Energy under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement (BPA). Revenues from the sale of RNG will be shared between Waga Energy and Scapigliato.
The landfill facility operated by Scapigliato can receive more than 300,000 tons/year of special non-hazardous waste and has an Integrated Environmental Permit issued by the Tuscany Region in February 2019.
The Plant Pole, which represents one of the most important waste treatment and disposal sites in the region, is managed by the company Scapigliato as a result of the concession issued by the Municipality of Rosignano Marittimo and valid until 2064 – has been developed since the early 1980s through the management of a controlled landfill facility for the disposal of municipal and special non-hazardous waste from the regional territory. As of today, the Scapigliato Pole, through the encouragement of material and energy recovery activities from waste, has as its main objective to ensure high standards of environmental sustainability through the adoption of innovative technologies.
