PlanET to Supply Anaerobic Digestion Technology for Flagship Convertus York Biofuels Facility

April 22, 2025.

St. Catharines, Ontario. PlanET Biogas Solutions Inc. (PlanET) is proud to announce its role as the supplier of  anaerobic digestion technology for the state-of-the-art Convertus York Biofuels Facility, scheduled to open in East  Gwillimbury, Ontario, in 2027. The facility will process pre and post-consumer food waste into biogas which will  then be upgraded to Renewable Natural Gas (RNG).

This landmark project, developed by Convertus Group in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of York, has  been in design and planning for the past two years and officially broke ground late 2024, marking the beginning of  construction on a facility that will redefine organic waste processing in the region.

As a key technology partner, PlanET will provide:

  • Four anaerobic digesters
  • Five pre-storage tanks
  • A heat recovery system with heat pumps
  • Digestate screening, pasteurization systems and pumping skids

This project represents a major step forward in sustainable infrastructure, and we’re proud to be part of it,” said  Mike Muffels, PlanET Program Director, Organics. “Collaborating with Convertus Group and the Regional  Municipality of York has been a rewarding experience, and we’re excited to deliver reliable technology that will  turn food waste into valuable resources.”

Once operational, the York Biofuels Facility will process up to 165,000 tonnes per year of post-consumer Source Separated Organics (SSO) and pre-consumer food waste. The facility is expected to generate up to 350,000  gigajoules (GJ) of RNG annually—enough to power approximately 5,000 homes. In doing so, it will help reduce  greenhouse gas emissions by up to 115,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ each year. Additionally, the facility will produce  around 165,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich fertilizer annually for local agricultural use, effectively closing the loop on  organic waste.

Our team is thrilled to contribute PlanET’s proven anaerobic digestion technology to this transformative project, said Derek Hundert, President of PlanET in North America. “The Convertus York Biofuels Facility embodies the kind  of forward-thinking, closed-loop approach to waste and energy that we’re passionate about supporting.
