AEBIG and AINIA have signed a collaboration agreement to promote the production and use of biogas and biomethane in Spain. The aim is to develop innovative solutions that contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency in key sectors such as the agri-food, chemical and environmental industries. The agreement was signed by the President of AINIA, Manuel García Portillo, and the President of AEBIG, Luis Puchades, who reaffirmed their commitment to the development of biogas and biomethane as sustainable energy sources.

Boosting Biogas Innovation

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in strategic areas such as the recovery of organic waste through anaerobic digestion, the optimization of processes to improve the production of biogas and biomethane, and the treatment and use of digestate for agronomic purposes. They will also work on characterizing and quantifying the substrates available for biogas production, developing new technologies for pre-treating organic waste and improving methods for optimizing and monitoring biogas plants. New applications of biogas will also be explored, such as its conversion into high-value-added chemical products through the Gas2Chemicals process.

AEBIG (The Spanish Biogas Association)

Founded in 2009, the Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG) is a non-profit organisation that promotes biogas as a renewable, environmentally friendly energy source that reduces emissions, upgrades waste, recovers nutrients, generates renewable energy such as biomethane, produces bioproducts such as biofertilisers and contributes to the development of rural areas. It represents the entire value chain of the sector, including plant promoters/developers, engineering companies, technologists, equipment suppliers, energy companies and technology and academic centres, both nationally and in France, Italy, Germany and Austria. Recognized by public administrations, universities and research centres as the most representative biogas entity, it actively participates in national and international forums and congresses and is a founding member of the European Biogas Association (EBA).

AINIA, a Benchmark in Biogas

AINIA, a pioneering technology centre in Spain in the development of biogas and biomethane, has more than 20 years of experience in different projects in the field of biogas and renewable energy. Its research has enabled the quantification and characterization of agri-food by-products suitable for biogas production, the design of co-digestion mixtures with maximum productivity, the optimisation of conventional production processes and the design of new processes with improved performance, the identification and resolution of inhibition problems, the development of digestate recovery processes, the improvement of knowledge of biological biogas purification processes, and the development of bioconversion processes for the CO₂ present in biogas with simultaneous purification of the same into biomethane.

Recent projects include the UPBIOMET+ project to develop a novel anaerobic digestion technology to increase on-site biomethane production by converting CO₂ into additional methane. This initiative aims to optimise energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in industrial processes. And the COMBOI project, which combines biotechnology and catalysis to convert CO₂ and methane into high-value bio-based products.
