Waga Energy: A Pioneer in the Conversion of Biogas into Biomethane

By Waga Energy

Founded in 2015, Waga Energy has become an innovative player in the recovery of biogas from landfill sites. Thanks to its patented WAGABOX® technology, the company transforms biogas into biomethane, a renewable energy that can substitute fossil gas. This unique technology meets the challenges posed by the complex and unpredictable composition of biogas, in particular its nitrogen, oxygen and volatile organic compound (VOC) content. The originality of WAGABOX® resides in the combination of two processes: membrane filtration to separate the carbon dioxide (CO2) and cryogenic distillation, which isolates the biomethane from the other gases. This innovative process produces a high-quality biomethane that can be used in traditional gas networks or in the form of compressed or liquified biofuel. Unlike conventional technologies used in agriculture or industry, WAGABOX® is specifically designed to deal with variations in the composition of landfill biogas, guaranteeing optimum performance. Since the commissioning of its first unit in France in 2017, Waga Energy has installed 28 units in several countries and continues to expand internationally with 11 units under construction.

Its listing on Euronext Paris in 021 has enabled it to finance this growth and meet the growing global demand for green energy. The company aims to enter into long-term partnerships with biomethane buyers, particularly in Italy, where landfill biogas does not yet benefit from government incentives.

With over 18% of Italy’s waste still landfilled, the exploitation of this energy resource could produce up to 1 TWh/year of biomethane. This represents a major opportunity in the fight against climate change, an issue to which Waga Energy is fully committed. By recovering biogas from landfill sites, the company is contributing to global climate objectives and helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Waga Energy has signed its first WAGABOX® project with Centro Servizi Ambiente Impianti (CSAI).

This new project from Waga Energy is for the Podere Rota landfill site in Terranuova Bracciolini, in the lovely province of Arezzo (Tuscany, Italy) on October 24th.

The WAGABOX® unit will be commissioned in 2026 and will produce up to 29 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of around 3,400 Italian households. The project will avoid the emission of around 5,900 tons of CO2e per year by replacing fossil-based gas with renewable natural gas.

With over 250 employees and cutting-edge technology, Waga Energy is a key player in the energy transition, determined to play a major role in reducing the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
